The luxury of opening your garage door by pushing a button in your car that is pre-programmed is one of the joys of having a garage door motor with a remote-control feature. However, whenever you push that button and nothing happens, it can be extremely frustrating.

There are many reasons a garage door won't open. On this page we'll be discussing what the most likely cause is when your garage door opener is making a very distinct grinding or humming sound.

Why Is My Garage Door Making A Grinding Or Humming Sounding?

The luxury of opening your garage door by pushing a button in your car that is pre-programmed is one of the joys of having a garage door motor with a remote-control feature. However, whenever you push that button and nothing happens, it can be extremely frustrating.

There can be many reasons for a failing motor not to work. If you are hearing the motor make a grinding sound or it just hums you most likely have a gear kit that is needing to be replaced. The gear kit is an essential part of the garage door opener that many people never see.

What Causes Gears To Stop Working Properly?

The gears can be damaged just from general wear over time, but another reason is due to an unbalanced door that has not been serviced properly. The best way to determine if your door is out of balance is to disconnect the door from the motor by closing the door and releasing it by pulling the red release cord. Once the door is released from the motor push your door up about midway. If it stays in place your door is balanced however, if it slides down or up you have a door that is out of balance.

Balancing your door should be done by a professional as this has to do with adjusting the torsion spring.

If your door is not opening or making grinding sounds give us a call and we will be happy to schedule an appointment to check your motor. While there it is our standard practice to inspect and service your door.
