Does Your Garage Door Start To Close And Go Back Up? It Might Be Your Photo Eyes

We Service All Brands of Garage Door Photo Eye Sensors

At Your Home Or Business

If your garage door opens for a little bit and closes again, this is generally an easy fix. Typically this is due to the photo eyes/safety sensors located at the bottom of your door.

Why Does My Garage Door Do This?

There are two built in safety features on the motor for your door. One is the pressure limits on your motor. When your motor is set up the technician sets the limits for closing the door. If the door hits something prior to reaching that limit and it creates a back pressure the door will retract to keep from pinning anything that might have got under the door. The other safety feature is your photo eyes. These are located about three to four inches off the floor on the tracks of your door. If your door is reversing before it closes but you have checked for anything in the way there is a safety override built into the system, this override is your wall button. To override the safety sensors just push and hold the wall button until the door closes completely. If you don’t have time to check the sensors/photo eyes or call a technician you can close the door by holding the wall button down until it is closed. This can override can save some frustration by helping you close the door until you have time to check everything or call a technician.

What Do The Photo Eyes Do In A Garage Door System?

Photo eyes create an invisible beam from one to the other and when this beam is broken by something it sends a signal back to the motor to stop the door from coming down. When the photo eyes are obstructed, typically the door will start down and then stop and reverse back to the full open position. Then the lights on the motor will start flashing. This is the key indicator that there is something blocking the photo eyes.

What Should I Check Before Calling a Technician At Action Garage Door?

First locate your photo eyes at the bottom of the tracks of your door. Then check to see if the lights on the back of the sensor are lit up. If there are no lights lit up then either they have no power or there is something blocking them from seeing each other. Sometimes due to the location of these sensors they can get bumped moving their position on the track so that the beam is broken causing the eyes to act as if there is something in the way. Many times there are leaves or a spider has decided to build a nest in the opening to the photo eye. If this is the case use a cloth or something that will protect your hands to clean this opening. If the light on the back of the sensor comes back on then you have just fixed the issue and your door should work properly now. If the lights don’t come back on check the wires on the back of the sensors. These have no voltage on them and are safe to touch. If there is a wire loose or broken and you are comfortable, you can reconnect or patch the broken wire. If you have checked these possible issues and the lights on the back of the sensors are still not on or the door is still not working properly it may be time to call a garage door professional.
